How Much CE Certification Costs: A Realistic Pricing Guide for Importers

Updated 2026-06-20

In my 20 years of sourcing from China, I've seen too many importers blindsided by CE certification costs—sometimes adding thousands of dollars and months of delays to their timelines. The truth is, the cost of CE marking varies wildly depending on your product type, complexity, and where you do the testing. Here's a practical breakdown of what you should actually budget for, whether you certify in Europe or through a Chinese lab.

What is CE certification?

There is no definition of “CE certificate” in EU legislation. This term was developed for industry needs. Instead, there is the CE marking. The CE mark (French: Conformité Européenne) confirms that a given product meets EU safety, health, and environment requirements. CE marking is mandatory for a wide range of products, such as:

  • electronics
  • toys
  • machinery
  • medical devices.

The CE certification process can be expensive and time-consuming, so it is worth knowing all the details before starting.

Note that using the CE mark when it is not required is against the regulations and may be sanctioned.

CE Certificate cost for various products

Attaching the CE mark to a product is free for the manufacturer or their authorized representative in the European Economic Area if the actual cost of stickers or engraving the mark on the product is not taken into account. The conformity assessment process generates the costs.

The cost of obtaining the CE mark depends on the specifics of the product. Below are the approximate prices:

  • toys: EUR 1,100 – 4,700 (including tests verifying compliance with EN 71 standards)
  • electronic equipment: EUR 2,300 – 9,400 (including tests related to EMC and LVD)
  • machinery: EUR 3,500 – 16,500 (risk analysis, compliance with the Machinery Directive, nameplates).

How much does CE cost in Europe?

The costs of obtaining the CE mark in Europe depend on several factors.

CE cost and product type

Checking the conformity of more complex products, such as electronics or machinery, or requiring detailed conformity assessment procedures, such as medical devices, is usually more expensive than for other product groups.

CE costs – choosing a notified body

There are many types of procedures for assessing the conformity of products with EU regulations and marking them with the CE mark. In some cases, a notified body must be involved in such a procedure, which generates additional fees. In Europe, prices range from EUR 700 to EUR 4,800 for a single CE marking, depending on the scale and type of product.

How much does it cost to prepare documentation for a product?

The cost of preparing documentation, such as technical documentation or a Safety Data Sheet (SDS), can range from EUR 120 to EUR 1,200.

Other costs that the CE conformity assessment procedures may incur include:

  • Consultancy fees: from EUR 240 to EUR 2,400 for support from compliance experts
  • Laboratory tests: from EUR 240 to EUR 13,500, depending on requirements.

How much does CE cost in China?

Even if they are not importing products to the EU under their own brand or trademark, importers must ensure that the products comply with EU regulations. Therefore, importers should know the cost of CE certification in China.

Remember! Even if you do not outsource production with your trademark in China, you should still register your logo in China. If you do not register your trademark in the PRC, someone else may take over your logo!

How to get CE cheaper?

In China, CE certification costs may be lower than in Europe due to cheaper labor. Here are some examples:

  1. Direct certification in China: Prices range from 2,000 to 10,000 yuan
  2. Product testing: in China, testing may be cheaper and cost from EUR 120 to EUR 1,200.
  3. Working with agencies: Companies offering compliance services in China can help you check your products’ compliance with CE regulations for EUR 240 to EUR 1,900.

It is worth remembering that getting a CE certificate in China may require closer supervision to ensure that the product meets European standards.

How long does it take to obtain the CE mark?

Knowing how much it costs to get the CE mark, it is worth determining how long the procedure takes. The time to obtain the CE certificate depends on the type of product and the preparation of the documentation:

  • for simple products, the EU compliance procedure takes up to three months
  • the EU compliance procedure takes three months to a year for complex products.

CE certification fees

Obtaining a CE mark is required for products from specific product groups. CE-related costs range from several hundred to several dozen thousand euros, depending on the product’s specifics, country of production, and detailed regulations. Import or manufacturing should be planned accordingly to avoid additional costs and delays.
